ORLANDO, Fla. — With “green” pet food, biscuits and other tasty treats available on many store shelves, pet owners now have a wide range of organic and earth-friendly options from which to choose. But increasingly, owners are finding they can also make environmentally friendly choices that go beyond the food bowl. And several new options were rolled out at the annual Global Pet Expo in Orlando.
“We look to incorporate the green and eco-friendly lifestyle into family’s homes with pets — and reach them through their pets,” said Emily Williamson with Colorado-based The Good Dog Company.
“For the most part, people are becoming more eco-minded and looking for alternatives in all departments,” Williamson said.
The Good Dog Company makes leashes, collars, harnesses and toys with organic cotton and sustainable, natural hemp.
“Hemp is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial so it’s resistant to mold and mildew,” Williamson remarked. “Baby-boomers have their fur babies. It’s a very rewarding relationship and they want to shower their pets with the best.”
Now, the “best” can also include bedding. Bowsers Pet Products manufactures a line of eco-friendly pet beds.
“We have in-house designers who wanted to bring design and functionality together,” said Linda Brown who leads the design team for Bowsers Pet Products with Eileen Wilkes.
“The polar fleece is made with recycled plastic bottles,” Brown said. “They break it down and spin it into a yarn to make the fibers. It’s the same with the fiber-fill inside. It’s all eco-friendly,” she said.
Brown says the foam is made from soy and is biodegradable.
For dogs who want to beat the heat in an earth-friendly way, Gramercy Distribution, based in New York City, markets the Cool Vest. Unlike many other cooling vests, the product is not filled with chemical gels and requires no refrigeration.
Even dog training is going green. Dog behaviorist and trainer Kathy Santo has developed a line of dog behavior aids using organic ingredients such as peppermint essential oil, chamomile and aloe vera gel.
All these and other green products featured at the Global Pet Expo are currently on the market or will be in the near future.

Hemp collars. Can I tell you how just this one thing has changed my life! As we all know, labs are water dogs. Normally with their old collars, they would swim all day, be outside in the heat and in 2 days of wearing those things the smell was unbearable! We were constantly washing the collars and the collars smelt worse than my husband’s socks do after he plays soccer in 100 degree heat (disgusting, yes i know). We started to carry hemp collars at our store and I was sooooo excited to test them out! Now, they play and swim all day and I barely have to wash them. They like everything get a little stinky over time but absolutely nothing in comparison and they come right out after the wash. #4 in painting your dog green….. anti-bacterial collars!! Hemp is great but bamboo is also a great material (if they make bamboo collars…;). Both are anti-bacterial and anti-microbial and perfect as dog collars!
