How It Started
Based in Golden, CO, The Good Dog Company designs and manufactures a line of durable, earth-friendly pet products priced for the mainstream consumer. Founded in 2003, we strive to be the most recognized name in hemp pet gear. Kim Oliver, the founder of The Good Dog Company and a dedicated dog owner, wanted to understand more about the hemp plant and the stigma attached to it when her interest was sparked by a series of timely circumstances. After researching more about this misunderstood plant and learning about its many benefits and uses, she found herself in the hemp pet product business.
The Canine Inspiration
Inspired by Howard and Ruby, Kim's two black Labrador Retrievers, and the toy mortuary that landscaped her backyard, she set out to design a dog toy that could withstand the rigorous “lab testers.” Thus was born The Bungee-Bone: An elasticized tug toy that is ruggedly constructed of two solid pieces of the heaviest weight hemp canvas to ensure a long, healthy lifespan. Because the Bungee-Bone was such a big hit with her friends and family, demand increased for more toys and gear. Using the same heavyweight 100% hemp canvas and durable construction, she began creating more toys and added a line of collars and leashes.
The Sustainable Factor
Central to the mission of The Good Dog Company is the belief that we have a responsibility to promote awareness of sustainable products and practices. Sustainabilility means that we meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations to meet their needs.
In support of this effort we will continue to:
- Manufacture goods using hemp and other natural fibers so that they are sustainable, safe, durable and useful for society.
- Employ our local workforce and emphasize American craftsmanship and sweatshop free labor.
- Reduce manufacturing waste through careful consumption and recycling.
- Donate a portion of our profits to environmental and social causes; both nationally and locally. Recipients include Leave No Trace, EnvironmentColorado, The Denver Dumb Friends League, The Humane Society and the Developmentally Disabled Resource Center.
